Best raw image quality of the tools we scored — weakest on control and privacy.
Midjourney is worth it if image quality and style are your priority: it scores 6.9/10 (T2), the best aesthetics of the tools we tested. It loses points for having no free tier, a Discord-first workflow, and public images on lower plans. Verified Jun 2026.
We ran the same prompt battery through Midjourney v6.1 on the web app. Below are three unretouched outputs, captured as-generated — no filters, no cherry-picking beyond one seed each.
Top-tier aesthetics and image coherence — the strongest raw output in the field.
Competitive entry price, but no free tier and fast-hour limits add up on heavy use.
The web app is approachable; a few power features still route through Discord.
Public images on lower plans; private generation only unlocks on Pro and above.
Community-led help; no formal SLA or ticketed support channel.
Rich community tooling, but the absence of an official API limits deep integration.

The aesthetic quality is genuinely a step above anything else I’ve tried — lighting and composition come out cinematic with barely any prompt-wrangling. --sref keeps a whole series on-brand.
Reference controls changed my workflow and v6.1 is noticeably sharper. Docking a star because there’s no free tier to test on, and I still bounce to Discord for a couple of things.
Beautiful images, but the Discord-first setup felt clunky as a first-timer and I didn’t love that my early generations were public by default until I upgraded.

For raw aesthetics Midjourney (6.9) leads; for prompt-following inside ChatGPT, GPT-4o image (7.1) supersedes the older DALL·E 3 (5.9). Pick Midjourney for picture quality, the assistants for convenience. [S9] · verified Jun 2026.
v6.1 sharpens image quality and coherence, improves text rendering, and speeds up generation over v6. [S10] · verified Jun 2026.
The best raw image quality of the tools we scored, with deep style controls — held back by no free tier, a Discord-rooted workflow, and public images on lower plans. If picture quality leads your decision and privacy is secondary, it's the standalone pick.
